The Eavesdropper

by Larry Chamberlin   Feb 20, 2008

I sit here listening to you talk,
you don't even realize
that I'm hearing you.
you speak to mama or sister,
in that private language
I'm only beginning to understand.

If you thought about it,
of course you'd know,
but I'm part of the furniture now,
just a body taking up space.
you've no idea
how tuned in to you
I am in these quiet moments.

I guess it doesn't bother me
that your words do not translate
and your meaning is lost to me.
It is not words that convey sense
at least, not the type of sense
I try to make of your world.

So speak freely, pay no mind
to my antennae raised high,
catching your messages.
The heart and soul of your tongue
speaks in a soft murmur
like the blood spilling lightly
from my heart.

now, really....let me speak with honesty, I never expected you'd write such an emotional piece ...why? because I know that no one is perfect! but you broke that rule!
dammit, I feel so jealous at the very moment, grrrrr.
