Words

He says he'll call back later,
And breaks in your heart another crater,
Because his sounds smell like lies,
No matter how hard he tries.

You know he can't always be there,
To love and listen and care,
No matter how much time,
His leaving is a crime.

While you sit there and wait,
You call and hang up hoping he'll take the bait,
But your phone stays silent,
And makes you want to riot.

You jump and scream,
When the phone rings,
And it's finally him,
You become ecstatic filled to the brim.

But he proceeds to tell you he can't talk long,
Shorter time than the shortest song,
He stammers and apologizes,
As you finally let out all your cries.

He begs for you to stop,
Says it's a habit you have to drop,
You insist you're alright,
And tell him you love him and good-night.

You hang up the phone in shock,
And lay down listening to your clock,
forgiving him slowly knowing it's okay,
And you love him, that's all you can say.
