Goodnight, My Angel

by I Seem to be the Heartless   Feb 25, 2008

Snuggled up on my lap,
You yawn.
I brush your auburn hair
Off your forehead
And smile at the peaceful
Look on your face.
I pick you up in my arms
And carry you to your bed.
Laying you down,
I tuck you in,
Pick up your teddy
And hand it to you.
You always have loved Pookey.
You look up at me
And ask me to stay for a while.
How can I refuse?
I sit on the bed next to you
And run my fingers gently
Across your pretty little face.
"Do you think Daddy
Will ever come back?"
You ask innocently.
Tears form in my eyes -
You are just too precious.
But how do I explain
That Daddy didn't want us,
That he left me when I was
Pregnant with you?
How do I tell you
That you will never know
Who your Daddy is?
"I don't know, Princess,"
Is all I can manage.
I put my head down
On the pillow next to yours
And wrap you in my arms.
"All you need to remember, Sam,
Is that Mommy will never leave you,"
I say through my tears.
"Now sleep, my baby
And know that I love you".
You smile,
"I love you too, Mommy".
