Hipperty hopperty.

by Mr. Darcy   Mar 2, 2008

Hipperty, hopperty bunny rabbit
hopping here and there.
Why do you find it necessary
To hip hop everywhere?

Hopping around the bushes,
And onto the vegetable patch,
Then after a crafty nibble,
You were off there in a flash.

I love the beautiful coat you wear,
With short hair soft and cool,
Excuse me now for asking,
Is your tail a piece cotton wool?

Your ears are long and funny,
They flip flop all around.
A wiggling nose and whiskers,
That never makes a sound.

I wish to hop and be like you,
Mr hopperty, should I dare
To have a coat and floppy ears,
Would be the answer to my prayers.

So many thoughts now in my mind,
As I lay upon the grass.
A summer sun is smiling down,
my weary eyes are closing fast.

Oh yes, I see it oh so clear,
The fun I'd have at school,
I'd surely be the teachers-pet,
No one would treat me cruel.

At break-time in the playground
My jealous friends can only watch,
The games I found to be so hard
Now as simple as hop scotch.

Bounding home, continued fun;
such games, like hide and seek.
My friends, I find so easily,
by jumping on their hidden feet.

It's late and so I'm heading home,
my bunny legs ache so much.
Mum stops me at the kitchen door,
a rabbits home's a rabbit hutch!

How can this be? I softly say,
but mum just shakes her head.
A rabbit ought to know his place,
So hop to your new straw bed!

I wake before the crowing hen,
But hey, where are my clothes?
I miss my room, I miss my toys,
And my shoes don't fit my toes!

I take a look outside my hutch,
And breakfast is on a plate.
A lettuce and a single carrot,
This really isn't great!

I wish I were a boy again
A rabbit's life is not for me.
I've made my friends so jealous,
I bet they all hate me.

I awake with wet and salty cheeks
It was all just a silly dream.
Relief's now etched upon my face
But whatever did it mean?

I run inside to find my mother,
And she inquires with open arms.
"There, there now my little precious,
What's caused you such alarm?"

She sat me down upon her knee,
Then my story I did tell.
And after listening to every word,
She smiled and said ahh well?

If your days are spent just wishing
To be something that you're not,
You'll fail to realise nature's gift,
And the opportunity you've got.

Michael - I thought this was the longest poem about a rabbit ever, until the final important message dawned on me! lol
It always strikes me as funny to read some of your earlier poems as your style has changed so much. However, this is a great read, has a great flow and kept me smiling and reading on!
All the very best and I hope you are well,

      Hello Ben,

thanks for dragging this one up from the dungeons. I cringe reading the errors, but it is rather sweet and I read this to my son many times. I have always liked to get some kind of message across.
