Story of a stone....

by Sai Vara Prasad Potharaju   Mar 14, 2008

There lived a stone
All useless with moss gathered
For years calm, not bothered
Breaking the silence, when wind blew
or when the showers, clouds threw
Years unaffected, by the shivering cold
Or facing a bold summer sun.

Decided for a change, he prayed to God
Said 'I want to be among the working class oh my Lord'
God appeared and said think again my son on what you want
I will come again before the summer starts
Adamant Stone stuck to his worldly desire
At the end of that season a Builder came with few men hired.
Bored the hill for stones with bulldozers, cranes
Stone found himself loaded on Lorry,
looked at open sky and thanked Heavens.

The work started and soon a spacious skyscraper stood
Stone was placed luxuriously inside a cozy room
With all the comforts of cooler, heater, television and speaker.
Again, thanked Heaven for fulfilling such tempting pleasures
He loved life and was a proud part of the building team
And watched soaps operas on TV screen.

But sometimes, when maid scrubbed him hard it was irritating
and more often found himself drenched amidst detergents and acids flowing.
Chill past through his spine when he watched the WTC collapse
And watched collapse of buildings in floods and earthquakes

Occasionally he remembers & watches his colleagues on Discovery Profile
And occasionally the noise of the tears is heard in the silence of the nights
Still he is laid in the Wall
Praying to God to give the sweet days back.

What a fantastic poem! So simplistic yet so effective! Many lessons and morals to be learnt in this poem so although it appears almost childish at first, its impact cannot be measured! Excellent writing! Congrats, great work!
