The Masterpiece

To My Masterpiece Toni:

One day, when God arose from bed
And saw the Earth as cold and dead
He weeped and cried, and then he said
"I shall create a masterpiece!"

And so he worked by candlelight
And when the sun was sharp and bright
He used to brush of warmth and light
With beauty great and pigment white
He worked through every barren night
And when she had the perfect height
And when he saw that all was right
He dropped his brush from hands so tight
And said, "I have a masterpiece!"

And so he let her on the Earth
In one most extra-normal birth
To live like all that she was worth
To live just like a masterpiece

But then God saw the side of hate
And saw the ones that couldn't wait
And so he'd know he wasn't late
He turned his head for a morning

On that fateful, thoughtful Eve
She watched her other savior leave
The one that kept her fragile weave
From breaking apart at the seams

That little girl, with future bright
Was forced to wage a holy fight
Which made her weep most every night
With the Devil sleeping below her

Although she lived on Earth in hell
The world thought she was good and well
But when the Devil rang her bell
Her world crashed down again

And then a Queen, with arms so sweet
The little girl, she had to meet
And when she did, she had to beat
The cruel and sadistic Devil

And so the Queen, with arms out straight
Said, "Come to me and leave this hate!
Come to my land and change your fate!
I truly think it's not too late!
For if you buy the Devil's bait
And if you stay at Satan's gate
And if you sit, and sulk, and wait
Then death will overtake you!

And then the girl, with hands so clean
Escaped from hell and hugged the Queen
Who took her to a land extreme
And said, "We're glad to have you!"

The little girl, with eyes so wide
Could never think the Queen had lied
But it was clear when she arrived
A demon was in charge!

And then the girl who'd fought for life
Was dealt the worst, most evil strife
And right before she grabbed the knife
She made a final plea

To God she said, "I've fought your war!
My fight has been the stuff of lore!
And now I'm weak, and sick, and sore
I fought today, I'll fight no more!
The fire's gone, my life's a bore
I'll let it go in one great roar
Unless you let your angels sore
And purify my rotten core
To turn my life to great from poor
I really need a miracle

On this heartbreak, this time her third
God had to show that he had heard
And then he used the silent word
To give the girl a miracle

He came to her some time ago
His love for her, he'd never show
But when that love had time to grow
He called to say, "I'm sorry"

And with that show of human love
She knew the good Lord up above
Had given her a precious dove
To serve her as her miracle

And when she sniffed, and when she cried
She knew he'd be there by her side
And when she turned to suicide
He came along to turn the tide
And when he broke, and when he cried
He wished that in her arms he'd hide
He never yelled and never lied
And soon, her love grew large and wide
Her life was not an easy ride
But she could live with him beside
When with her love, she would confide
Her hate and rage, it all had died
And she was truly happy

The two in love would spend their time
They'd sit and talk and laugh and rhyme
They'd fight through all the muck and grime
To stay together forever
