An Angel's touch

by East Poetry   May 23, 2004

I sense your presence near to me, yet I seem to be alone,

running through the darkness on a long and weathered road.

The obstacles prove ruthless as the fog begins to thicken.

An unseen rock impedes my pace, and downward I am stricken.

Eyes... colliding toward the earth, I brace to take the blow,

but the ground gave way before me as I crash into a hole.

Struggling for composure not a second to react,

I fall through the abyss, and await the harsh impact.

Moments later I awaken, with a ringing in my head.

The darkness all about me, how could I not be dead?

As I pressed myself upright, and briefly tried to stand

I realized in a panic, I was sinking in the sand!

Immediately I yelled for you, still sensing you were near!

Your presence all around me, ... yet you didn't seem to hear?

I know that you are out there! You could save me if you tried!

Why when I needed you the most, would you run away and hide?

I watched in horror as my chest got sucked into the land,

Yet the sinking of my heart, was now quicker than the sand.

knowing it was over, and that soon I would be dead.

I humbly closed my weeping eyes, took a breath and bowed my head.

While the last bit of my body was being swallowed by the tangle.

I stilled myself and whispered, "Father, please send to me an angel."

In agonizing fear.... with no one to hear my plea!

... ... ... ... Sinking .... Sinking ... Sinking ... ...

Suddenly... I felt a gentle squeeze!

In a blinding rush of speed, as if ripped out of a scene,

I jerked upright in bed and awakened from my dream.

I glanced over to see you sleeping, in your cool and solemn grace,

unaware of my awakening, sweat pouring down my face.

Gazing downward at my side still shaken by the sand, it was then,

I realized that in this nightmare, we were always holding hands.

... It wasn't but a moment, when I saw you come awake,

You moved closer in toward my side, and gave me a gentle shake.

As I looked into your soft blue eyes, you neared my face with ease.

Confused, you kissed me on the lips and said,

"Strange?... I felt an urge to squeeze?

The fact that you were able to lead it to a nightmare at the very end just makes this poem just.. amazing beyond words. I know I'm new ish to the poem making process, but this is one of those poems that instantly touches a person. Either they get tears in their eyes or just speechless, it came out so wonderfully and I love it

Enjoyed most of the rhythm, the journey of this was very well told.

I believe your rhyming scheme would be better switching care for fear, and some different sentence not ending in tangle as it doesn’t rhyme with angel(although the sentence with tangle had deep feeling in it)

All in all an enjoyable read

At first glance, it seems so long and boring that I almost skipped this. I'm really glad I didn't. Perhaps play with the layout/format to make it 'visually' look good and not boring? I usually skip really long poems here lol. So my advice: think of the format.
The title should be: An Angel's Touch
Punctuation is important. Especially with the title, because wrong punctuation/spelling in the title would undermine the actual poem.
The flow was just smooth and the transition of events and tone was well executed. The rhymes were also a nice touch. Well done :)
