Eggshells

by StandStill   Apr 6, 2008

She walks on egg shells, ivory in nature
they gouge her feet, crimson tears falling
she hides in the darkness of night, nothing
and to the angels she is constantly calling

drowning in a sea of doubt and shame
she wants to take it all back to where it started
back to the days where butterflies danced in sunshine
back before her ebony soul was martyred

and her heart cries, while it sits in its cage
the steel bars, creating teeth, hypnotizing
a distraction, a calling on the wind, another memory
a momentary glimpse of joy...it's agonizing

watch the little girl, reader, break an egg shell
snapping against her skin, reddening, bleeding
her precious cargo, that once held in her hands, hope
with the spill of her blood, it begins receeding

Back before her ebony soul was martyred
    ^^^
Great word usage and quite vivid imagery in this line.

and her heart cries, while it sits in its cage
the steel bars, creating teeth, hypnotizing
a distraction, a calling on the wind, another memory
a momentary glimpse of joy...it's agonizing
    ^^^
This stanza screams anguish, such deep emotions, very profound.

her precious cargo, that once held in her hands, hope
    ^^^
I really liked this line ... the addition of "hope" made it a perfect line.

A very sad piece penned and such a unique title.
    Well done
