Dear John

by Michael D Nalley   Apr 12, 2008

Dear John I was married to your pen pal
I could tell you believed she was your gal
Maybe it was a harmless innocent fantasy
That brought you to the point of ecstasy

I believe love is a good thing of course
No matter the origin of it or the source
You criticized me for trying to understand
Why she needed you while I was her husband

You could not see past a very thin disguise
Therefore you believed all of her lies
You know I find it very difficult to criticize
For many times passion has blinded my eyes

You may understand that I found it odd
That you believed she was sent to you by God
I know how desperately you wanted her in your life
I just wished she could learn to be someone's wife

Another good piece, not 'fantastic!', but good. I don't have a favorite stanza, but I do have a favorite line, which is the second line, of the second stanza. I liked this line, mainly because out the rhyme, and the way it was structured, but also for the power behind the words.

I since a hint of compassion and anger mixed. Also the pain is so clear. What is really ironic is that you give the reader a since of self shame on top of it all. Not alot..just a hint.

The emotions that are in this poem makes it very effective. The hardest thing I have ever seen is a writer portraying more than two emotions at a time. Normally there is anger that is screaming out while a hint of pain; however, you have shown alot more and it came out beautifully.

It almost felt as if I was in the room with you and could see these emotions dancing around bitterly in your eyes.

What can I say other the AWESOME!
