Florence Smiles

by Lu   Apr 15, 2008

Heavy tongue
monotoned speech
cluttered words
trying to break free

Masked face
with unblinking eyes
thoughts slowing, memory
dying inside

Disturbing dreams
wake in confusion
reach for water
with shaky hands

Take a sip
dysphagia sets in
glass falls to the floor
broken ... unlike her spirit

Room 401
where antiseptic lingers
hello Grandma
how are you today

A porcelain smile
etched upon glass skin
who are you child
what is your name

I am your Grandson
as he holds her hand
and repeats yesterday
over again, with admiration

In the dark of night
we know she has found peace
perfect smile displayed upon her lips
as her soul soars to the Heaven's

*Life with Parkinson's disease*
Dedicated to Darryll's Grandma Florence.
Who lived the life that was chosen for her with no
regrets and died with dignity.

    Luanne,

Very touching....it is so awfull for the ones that love a person with Alzheimer to stand by and watch their beloved one lose all.

It runs in my family too and maybe one day I will have it too and not be able to remember you all or that I ever knew how to write poetry.

    Much love,
    Ingrid

your words crawl right into my heart. Ths is so sad yet it shows the human nature to carry on with what has been given to them.

This stanza really moved me. My mamaw had a spirit like this. We lost her a year ago. She was always in extremem pain and tried to hide it. Alwats a hu a big smile and an I love you for everyone.

This is so sad yet so beautiful Luanne. That she got her end reward. God's promise eternal peace.
    Excellent job!
