The Mouse

by Jemma   Apr 18, 2008

Just a blur on the ground but the aged ochre eyes see it
And war begins
The strength of will and power to be expected fades from memory
With the onslaught of irrational, unfounded fear

The illogical confusion thrumming through our veins
Fight or flight
We're running.

As national tension escalates fear mongering exerts itself
And we are left facing off with an enemy that does not exist
That should not exist

We all hold on to fancied fears when we could cast them aside at the blink of an eye
If we only dared motivate our intention

So many people stumble over bracken, over lines in the pavement
And yet manage to clamber over mountains
Creatures of great size and dignity reduced to fleeing a wisp of the wind

**Written as a response to 'The Mouse' but I didn't fancy writing about a little rodent witha long tail and istead worked with the old myth of an elephant being afraid of mice, and thus began this poem, hopefully conveying how fear escalates from nothing.**
