The City

by Dennis   Apr 20, 2008

Noisy crowded buses run
Taxi cabs they scurry
Pavement crowded...must keep moving
The faceless people hurry

Living city fed by trains
The statues ever watchful
River blue unwinding onward
Don't stop to look...be careful

Strangers pass by on the bridges
Ships and boats pass under
Museums guard secrets of the past
The tourists stop to wonder

Modern city with an eye
Countless areas to roam
Place of commerce...place of money
For some it's just a home

City's poor too...yes the homeless
In their cardboard city
Pretty parks and tinkling fountains
And sordid crime too...pity

Bustling city by the day
Don't come to be a stranger
Restless city by the night
Still boats upon the water

City breathes through all the night
Women ply their trade
Bars and clubs and bouncers might
Another living made

All the children playing round
Sweet joy upon their faces
City life...it's not so hard
It's not the worst of places

We all go home...sleep in our beds
Beggars find a doorway
As night drops down the city dreams
It sighs and lives on always

Living city with its history
The people fill its veins
Without the people working...living
Laughing...what remains

I'm new here, and have never lived in the city. But this poem makes me feel like I have actually experienced it. Profound, sensitive, all things that are worthwhile are in this poem...I did love it.

The rhytm and diction reminds me of W. H. Auden's: 'The Night Mail". You have portayed an impressive side of city life not taking much dig at it. A very good poem. I specialyy appreciate:

    Noisy crowded buses run
    Taxi cabs they scurry
    Pavement crowded...must keep moving
    The faceless people hurry

How insignificant individuals are in the crowdy humdrum of city life.

This brings back many memories for me, most of them not so good. I miss the variety of places to go and things to do, but I'll never again live in a big city. I love the country and the feeling of security :)
