Painted lady's tattered wings

by StandStill   Apr 24, 2008

Sweetness was upon the air
oh, beautiful scents of spring
life bursting forwards
the birds were back to sing

Crack, and the mystery bursts
and a wetness rushes out
crinkling fragile paper walls
tear away, with this, comes lies and doubt

Reader, can you see it?
Here comes the butterfly
electricity hums upon the wind
as she opens her graceful eyes

Painted-lady's exhaustion
a desperation now to be free
unfurling gossamer wings
flinging dew, pretty as can be

And she takes the leap
to join the spring in song
and the wind fills her wings
but...it doesn't last long

Plummeting to the ground
tattered wings, no good
oh, beautiful butterfly
falling, they knew you would

The birds of prey swoop down
upon this broken life
torturing, tormenting her
ripping away little bites

Beautiful wings were never full
can't fly if you don't know how
when painted-ladies die alone...
spring time's crying now..
