IN THE EYES OF HEROES

JAN.5TH 2008
What does A soldier see,
when he stands at the gate marked DEPLOYMENT,
as he hugs his 16 year old bride of two years. Knowing the baby she carries may never see daddy's face?
I guess he sees A wife as courageous as him, as they exchange hugs that might have to last A lifetime!

What does A young bride see,
when the postman brings her the first letter marked VIET-NAM , knowing he's one of many , in the heat of the TET OFFENSIVE !
I guess she sees tears of joy , as she says thank you God , can I get another letter tomorrow ?
to get me through another day !

What does A soldier see ,
As he straps on his goggles and mask,
Knowing , he has A gun too , but his is one that sprays chemical's ! They call it AGENT - ORANGE !
You see, his job is to kill the foliage, so the enemy has no place to hide!
I guess the other soldiers see him as their hero,
because his job allows more of our young men to live !

What does A soldier see,
Now that he is much older than his years!
When he steps off the plane, home at last, as the love of his life, runs to meet him to hand him his baby girl, his only child, he prayed so long to hold !
I guess he sees A sight too good to be true !
even though he hears the crowd of protesters
YELLING , BABY KILLER, BABY KILLER !

What does A soldier see,
Thirty eight years later ,when his bride of forty years
comes running to him once again,
This time with A dozen long stemmed roses , and the biggest smile, saying, Dave, how did you manage to send me these?
I guess he sees ahead , at least this hero does !
This hero had this planned two years ago,
when he could walk, when he could talk, when he could still swallow his food and breathe without a machine!

You see the war in VIET-NAM ended over thirty five years ago.But for these two heroes, the battle continue;s on!
Because of AGENT ORANGE , Dave now has A-L-S !
And thank god he also has Bev, who I am proud to know as my sister !
I have been fortunate to know two hero's in my life,
and they've been fortunate to have each other !

So if you know A hero, and if you know A soldier you do !then tell them how proud you are of them! don't let them get away without it 1

So MELVIN DAVID HAGAN, I gotta tell ya, I love you ( CARPET MAN ) Your not just my brother-in -law
your AN ALL AMERICAN HERO!
