Little Alice

by Jemma   May 7, 2008

Little Alice
Asleep in the snow
Where now will you go?
Now that you've gone so far away
When will you go home?

It's so cold outside but the sun shone for you
It's heating your face but the ice takes its place
In your heart

What were you hiding from?
What dogged your footsteps?
Pushed you on, forced you on
When were you going to go home?

It's been so long, such a long, lonely time
Without you in your home just stranded in my mind

I know it was difficult with them tearing us down
Right down to the ground but the dirt kept us standing
We wouldn't curl up too soon

Little Alice
What have you done?
I know you ran from your troubles
And dragged me behind
Following you forever, but I never knew my way
I begged you, please, just to tell me you'd stay
Somewhere deep and precious in my heart

Oh please, don't leave me to just hold out a hand
To the snows of the winter and hope to feel you in its grasp

The grasses have withered when the gales uprooted
The stems of the haven we both know you sought
Perhaps I should have chased you then
As I follow you now
But I never really knew what to say
Would you let me stay?
In your little hole, buried deep in the ground, and alone

But we make it on our own
But I wish I could have leant you a hand
Not that you would have taken that hand
But perhaps you'd have taken my soul
