For One Of My Friends

by Poet on the Piano   May 9, 2008

We giggled and laughed after school,
Like two friends would usually do.
We left to leave for our own homes,
While we waited for Monday to come.

The phone rang at exactly 5:26,
And I heard your crying voice.
My smile suddenly faded away,
As I asked you what was wrong.

You said, "You know my grandpa,
The one that was in so much pain?
He passed away a minute ago,
And I will never see him again."

You whispered, "He meant a lot to me,
He cared for me like a father would,
I miss him right this very second,
And I want him to come back."

Then you automatically burst into tears,
As I listened and tried to comfort you.
I have seen death right before my eyes,
And I know the terror it really brings.

You sadly said, "His funeral will be soon,
But I am not going to wear black at all."
I asked confused, "Why aren't you?"
This was your response to me.

"I want to rejoice and be glad,
That he might go to the Father.
I don't want to be negative,
But only be glad for him."

Through a tear you added in,
"My grandpa was a very good man,
My heart tells me he is in Heaven,
And that he is looking down on me."

I responded, "That is so very true.
He is now in God's own hands,
And he will be taken care of,
For he is now in a better place."

When you are reading this, Emily,
Know you can cry on my shoulder,
You can always come to me to talk,
And I will forever be your friend.

This poem was written on Friday, May 9, 2008. Written for one of my friends, Emily. May God bless her grandpa and grant him eternal life in Heaven.

What a heartbreaking story! It's encouraging to read that there are people like you out there who provide shoulders to cry on for friends in need. It's a rare thing to see so I applaud you doing what great friends should.

There were moments in this piece where you forced some rhymes and threw off the flow for me but you made it up in your emotion. Well done/ *5/5*
