A Civilian's Pledge

by Natalie   May 10, 2008

The dominators of western capitalist prostitution,
Rise tall and proud, staring at your tedious existence.
No dreams of improvement, killing mankind's revolution.
You are their national convenience, no chance of resistance.

Subjugated identities, conforming to abnormality,
Liberty suppressed. Muzzled freedoms of speech,
Claiming inability, but your biggest crime is impartiality,
Never acknowledging these ideals are a conformist's breach.

Inhaling the smoke of your charcoaled dreams,
Detesting fate for not bestowing you with bliss,
Forgetting you ignored your inner child's screams,
By consenting to inhabit this sin infested abyss.

Innocent souls massacred in a filthy, oily war,
The price of a life diluted for the price of your gas.
Gifting men with gold for bleeding flesh, deadly lure.
Allowing them to forget, gold does not God surpass.

An Iraqi war hero returns home, broken mind,
Mourning his brothers returning framed in a coffin,
Yearning his wife's touch, the lady he left behind,
Now common meat, sin meets sin as he feels her skin.

Centuries of torturous slavery, still remains alive.
Institutionalized minds, running in distorted directions,
Suppressed talents dying in crime infested ghettos,
Dying with every hour, innocent childish expectations.

Freedom restricted, individuality assassinated.
Infidelity a fashion, fading ideals of religion,
Propaganda inducing hate, no race discriminated,
Spiritual iniquity enticed by blinding media.

That sense of peril behind your closed door.
Another child killed. Hear his mother scream?
Open your eyes! See what filth lies before you,
I give to you, in all its glory, the American dream.

Such a brave poem to write, and an epic one at that. I admire your courage to write about such a touchy subject, truly in great form.

This stanza seems to be the one that sort of sums up what you're trying to get at here, Natalie, I truly admire this poem and the form, and the splendid word choice. It's a poem, a plea, and a call out to the civilians all in one, such a uniquely phrased and formed poem. I could not have put it any better, or even half as much, this poem deserves such credibility for being a stand out poem.

I admire your courage, I admire this peice, I admire the form, the word choice, and I admire you for writing a poem like this. Someone had to, and that someone is you.

    Excellent.

I live in America, and I agree with every word of this.
It was a fantastic write, a great subject. If only people would view America like this, then maybe there could be change.
Your ending was AMAZING. It totally went out with a BANG!
    Fantastic!
