Hungry Eyes

by Deana   May 20, 2008

Hiding behind a tough facade
Humor getting you through
Face reality? What good would it do?

Afraid to dream, afraid to hope
Filling life with mundane things
The way you've learned to cope

Walking through life, in laughter and lies
The emptiness within your heart
Is there in hungry eyes

Pretending to the world
That you no longer care
Undeniable fate, life is never fair

At a lonely distance, couples stroll along
A sunset doesn't look the same
When you watch it all alone

Walking through life, in laughter and lies
The emptiness within your heart
Is there in hungry eyes

Very deep, it strikes at the human soul

I don't agree with the comment above and like the poem as you have written it. This poem is sad, deep and true. Nice job!

Enjoyed the message in this write. The eyes forever the mirror of the soul.
Had a bit of a time with the metre where the lines were shorter. Fifth stanza's rhyme lost me, "along" and "alone"(?), perhaps a suggestion:
"At a lonely distance, couples stroll
A sunset doesn't look the same
    When loneliness peals its toll"
    As always an opinion.

    Deana,

It seems to me you know an awfull lot about the human mind and you seem genuinly interested in you fellow man. Again a very touching piece....

Very sad and moving piece you have penned.

    Hiding behind a tough facade
    Humor getting you through
Face reality? What good would it do

How many of us do this hiding from our reality.....Just to make it from one day to the next.

At a lonely distance, couples stroll along
A sunset doesn't look the same
When you watch it all alone

I think this was my favorite stanza. Brought a tear to me eye. Nothing looks the same when your alone.
    Great job!
    Take Care Cindy
