War Toll

by Stacey de Luna   May 21, 2008

The tears fall swiftly like raindrops
From her beautiful bright hazel eyes
She clenches the photos of her serviceman
As she lays in her bedroom and cries
The man that she fell in love with
Has died in this foreign mess
Despair cloaks her fragile mind
Tears soak her dark winter dress
The flag-draped casket lays in view
Of his family, loved ones, and friends
They all stand in line to pay their respects
With his wife standing at the end
She gently touches the mahogany
And says her final goodbyes
The sound of his voice echoes in her ear
The tears pour down from her eyes
The family lays the soldier to rest
As they hold a moment to pray
The wife of the soldier wishes for peace
And an end to the war, today.
