Under the Moonlight (a sestina)

by Gabba Gabba Hey   May 21, 2008

I wonder when I'll begin to hope
or for once be able to wish
because I've looked on so many stars
and been laughed at by the moon
but somehow I can't get over you
somehow I can't be free

So much in such a small word, free
so much reason to start to hope
I never wanted to control you
I just wanted your one wish
Just look upon the crying moon
look as she cries the stars

What a strange world it is when falling stars
comprise the only way to be free
the poor, poor, broken little moon
that is only trying to give hope
but still, I cannot wish
because I cannot get through to you

I grimaced that night I saw you
that night underneath the stars
I knew you were trying to wish
I'm sorry you never feel free
I'm sorry you can't bring yourself to hope
but can't you see the promises in the moon?

He's laughing you know, the man in the moon
he's laughing at me 'cause I'm stuck on you
he's laughing at us 'cause we won't hope
we are frowning as he eats the stars
we can never be free
because he is eating our one wish

It's funny how pressure can reveal a wish
how tough love through the moon
was the only thing to make me free
but it seems to have imprisoned you
beneath a canopy of stars
now it's for you I hold the hope

I hope for you to find your wish
beneath those stars and caring moon
because to be you, you must free

I really liked it. My only big issue with it was you switching the Moon's personified gender from female to male. Other than that, I really enjoyed the poem and you truly made me think about my life and love in general. Thank you and great work!
