Story of the Union Bearer

by StandStill   May 27, 2008

Sitting next to my friends,
Smiling, anxiety on this foul wind,
Someone walks by, looks down,
I look up, knowing that ((I'm pinned...))

((Why is he looking at me?!))
What did I do this time?
I don't know, but he looks so angry...
I didn't commit any crime!

Told to rise to my feet, I do,
lump in my throat rises as well,
flag put into my hands...
realizing ((I've been plunged into hell))

The first shots ring out,
gun fire an exotic smell in my nose,
marching forward ((I'm too young!))
people fall, color of the reddest rose

((Why do I march forth?!))
Feet plunge forth into the chaos,
friends screaming, dead, alive,
nothing matters and it's all a mess

((God, please...save me))
Into the thick of this strange place,
men in different colors every way I look
Fear and pain upon every man's face

Sweating hands clutch tightly,
holding the flag so it won't fall
((Don't they shoot the bearer first?!))
To drop the flat would be the worst sin of all

Suddenly the world goes black,
silence instiled in a heavy heart,
no longer myself, just a body falling down,
knew I would die from the start

((That hurts too much...))
My simple thoughts, they don't matter,
just this war, these shots in the day,
all around me, I hear my own blood spatter

((I'm sorry))
and the flag falls

**not a fun dream...poem doesn't amount to it...>.<**
