My walls

by Grant Gilbert AKA Slash   Jun 3, 2008

My walls

I built my walls to hide behind
With laws and rules I tow the line
But behind my walls no laws or rules to confine
A beautiful mind from this wonderful world of mine

I built my walls with faces and places and things from my past
Each pleasant encounter another brick in the wall
A memory to savor
Something to last

For some people reality is but an illusion
Their lives spent behind a wall of confusion
Their walls built on dreams so swift and so fleeting
Like gossamer butterflies as their thoughts are leaving

My walls are built with no locks or doors, and windows from which to view the world
Not a glimpse or a glimmer inside these walls
Unless invited no entry allowed
What a privilege to look inside and behold my mind

A secret place of refuge
A place to retreat
When things become too much it's here that I'll come
A place that I often feel that I'll not want to leave

Sometimes I go there to scream and to shout
On the outside the world sees a peaceful facade
But when it's chaotic outside I'll step into my box
And listen to the quiet that everyone forgot

My heart beats so loudly my breath like a storm
Calling, calling voices so soft but gone from this world
Behind my four walls never to return
Lost in the darkness and safe from it all

Great poem. There is so much meaning in it. Very powerful, flowing poem, like like a river after week-long rain. Awesome writing. Honest Luck

Grant My good friend, I have a simular box with walls of leatherand steel but there are certain spots built with the finest silk.
My true friends have woven the fibers and when I feel the gentle imprint of their presence I once again know it is time to receive their warm embrace, for they are the very craftsmen that strengthen my fortress and supply the comforts within my walls

That was all so true because we all need a place to go sometimes where we can just escape and find ourselves again, sometimes the world just becomes so much to deal with that we just need time to the walls that are our own. well done, loved reading it!!

Loved these lines a lot.A safe haven our mind is where refuge we can find.We observe things around us and retreat to our secret place where nobody can interfere but of course "unless invited".
Very nicely written insight to ones own thoughts.
