My Nightmares

How can things be this way?
All you do is care
It's never enough for my mind
These dreams could end up real
But how are they dreams
When all they do is frighten
Could they be warnings?
Could they be the future?
Why do they come
When all it does is makes things worse
Should I not close my eyes each night?
Avoid hurting you all together?
Maybe not.
Nightmares will still come
Whatever path is chosen
Never seems to be the right one
It's hard to even bother to smile
When hiding my nightmares from you
Only makes tears fall
But telling you makes it so much worse.
I know you can't handle anymore
Anymore secret truths of mine
I don't understand them
I can't control them
I can barely handle them
What would make me think you could
These nightmares I can't ignore
But I can't bring them up either
So I'll just stay here
And linger over things I can't control.
