The Last Love Song

by Bre Monique   Jun 12, 2008

Once again, she sits alone in her living room,
With her glass of wine in the bask of the warm candlelight
Another peaceful night to herself, she thinks,
As she reaches for the stereo remote

She turns it on and a familiar song blasts through the speakers
And the wine suddenly turns

The cassette plays and she remembers the familiar song
As the song of him and her -
Or at least, it used to be

She thought it was over, she thought she had moved on
Yet it's evident the way the song still affects her she hasn't
With every word, a new tear is formed,
And she finally lets it fall
With no one to hide it from, she let's out that long, overdue cry

She remembers how he had looked her square in the eye
And he had said he was falling in love with her
He'd said if she'd be his, he'd never hurt her

And with that memory she removes the bracelet from her wrist
The one that spells out the word "love", and she throws it
The bracelet is just as much as a lie as his words were that night
For she'd been his and he'd hurt her in a way words can't describe

The song continues to sing to her about love and how good it feels
But it didn't sing of the pain that usually follows
The candles were slowly burning out ... just as their love had
Nothing lasts forever and tomorrow tends to always come to soon

She listens to the song, receiving her final closure
She promises herself that as the last words left the singer's lips
The last bit of love she had for him would leave her heart
And she would give up on what would never return

Only the cassette skips - and she opens her eyes
As the broken record restarts the song

It must be a cruel joke, she thinks, as new tears form
Right as she's ready to finally accept and move on,
The cassette stops before she can, stuck on that one song,
Her mind stuck on what could have been

She stayed up for hours listening to it repeat and repeat
Not once did it end
And not once was she able to take him out of her heart
If the cassette couldn't even move on -
How could she?

Very clever this metaphoric poem, well thought out and constructed on a cassette player, playing a love shared song which in most loving relationships we inherit. I can still recall mine ('Young Girl by the Union Gap') from a lost love that lasted nearly 30 years I love this and yes nothing last forever or does it, I am still in love with that person, but life goes on and I now have a new love and wife but I do get the odd twinge. Great

I absolutely love this metaphor! How she can't move on, she can't keep her promise to turn on because the song won't end. Its beautifully sad but so true. I love the meaning of this poem. 5/5
