Through your veins

by Heidi   Jun 25, 2008

You crave it when you awake,
You need it at night.
You cannot go without it,
It's too much of a fight.
You take a drink of this,
Mid afternoon.
You won't have to remember,
pretty soon.
You need it in your system,
The thrill to flow through your veins.
'Just one drink',
Just one drink, you claim.
Hours pass,
And that chair you miss.
All you want is that anger to pass,
As you raise your fist.
It's supper time now,
But what is food to you?
Missing another meal,
Is really nothing new.
After a period of time,
That thrill is still in your veins.
'Just one more drink',
Just one more drink, you claim.
The chair you were sitting in so long,
Will not help you up.
You start to yell at it,
Trying to get up, is just too much.
Embarrassed that you're tipsy,
Angers you even more.
As you jump to your feet,
And fall to the floor.
You're focused again,
And that thrill is still in your veins.
'Just a couple more drinks',
Just a couple more drinks, you claim.
It took it away for a little while,
The pain you could not bare.
Your tears start to fall from your eyes,
And through the window you stare.
The ignition starts up,
The windshield wipers are on.
You put the vehicle into drive,
The view of your house is gone.
Your vision is a blur,
But that thrill is still in your veins.
'Just one last drink',
Just one last drink, you claim.
The lights are bright, flashing red and blue,
The rain is hard on your skin.
The pavement feels cold,
And your blood is running thin.
You're going in and out of consciousness,
The light seems so near.
You want to grow your wings and fly away
Because death, you do not fear.
Your head hurts more this time,
That thrill is gone from your veins.
'That was my last drink, forever',
My last drink forever, you claim.
