Mental Breakdown

by Ray Smallshaw   Jun 29, 2008

He climbed into himself and drew down the shutters,

He was safe in his own inner self, away, gone,

Untouchable, internally suspended, enclosed, lost,

No work, no thoughts, just nothingness, just waiting,

Unable to cope mentally with life's realities,

Mind system alarms to off, shut, no entry, no output,

Yet in minds deepest depths, still a flame,

He wanted no more of life's disappointments, sorrow, broken-heart, so why? Tilt!

Mindless to all external assaults he wound down, shut his mind to off.

I can relate to this. That said, the 6th and 8th lines pretty much say the same thing 3 times in the same empty manner. And while I understand the theme is indeed that tragic sense of a personal void, I do think modifying that last line to encapsulate the utter feeling of despair and hopelessness would make this poem an absolute gem.
