Falling Apart to Songs About Hips and Hearts

by HOLLYWOODxBANGBANG   Jul 2, 2008

One foot on the dashboard, one hand out the window:
We're driving out to a place only the two of us know.
The radio strums the songs we proclaimed as our own,
And at sixteen, no one wants to be alone.
His hand is tapping the wheel to the beat of the strings,
And under his breath, he softly sings:
The words that hold us together, the ones we never say;
Until the moment has already come and gone away.

The sun shone bright on that spot by the lake,
And he held my hands as they began to shake,
With eyes bloodshot red, he flashed me a milky smile,
Said: "Can we stay right where we are for a little while?"
Falling head over heels, I wasn't in a position to say no,
And there in his arms, there was no place else I'd rather go.
We felt it moving just a little too fast,
Hoping that what we found would last.

The end of the summer proved to be bittersweet:
Brought me to tears as I begged at his shuffling feet,
But there was nothing I could try to say or do,
He had made up his mind, and we were finally through.

Down at the lake, that spot still shines nice and bright,
And if I stand here long enough, it takes me back to that night:
Your hands in mine, laying together at the edge of the trees,
Time was ticking, but we had feelings to please;
Your breath on my neck, we wrestled under the harvest moon;
Cursing when the morning came just a little too soon.
And we left all of our memories back on range road thirty-three,
You said you loved me, as we leaned against the tall oak tree.

But that wasn't enough to keep you here,
So I sat back and watched your brake lights disappear,
Praying to God you'd find your way back to me one day,
And trapped in my heart are the words I never tried to say.

    This is beautiful, and there are no other words to describe it.
