Those were the days

Remember when we were five
and all we wanted was candy
when everyone was our friend
even mommy and daddy

when vegetables were yucky
and santa claus was real too
when wed come back from the playground
with sand still in our shoes

when all the boys had cooties
and they couldnt hold our hand
when a simple playground sand box
was turned into an island

when our dreams became reality
and our imagination took over our world
when we had to get ready for picture day
with girly dresses and hair curled

whenever mommy was sad
we hugged her til she smiled
when we did something right
theyd call us their good little child

when the only way we were hurt
is when we skinned our knee
when every single girl
could see that she was pretty

when we got into mommys makeup
and put lipstick all over our face
when we had lots of contests
and everyone got first place

when everything made us smile
and nothing made us sad
when we saw a toy on tv
as somethin we had to have

when dollies were our best friends
and our skies were never grey
when our school clothes were our play clothes
when we always had our way

when we wanted cake for dinner
when size didnt matter
when people didnt compare
to see which person was fatter

when a kiss could heal a cutt
and a hug could heal a bruise
when being mature was dumb
and immaturity was all we knew

when you were read stories at night
and you were tucked into bed
when your smiles meant the world
and when your bangs covered your forehead

when you took naps in kindergarten
and learned your abc's
remember when we were five?
man those were the days

Well, the last stanza doesn't really rhyme, but that's okay. You know, I never thought boys had cooties. I think I missed that phrase of a little girl's life. I loved this poem. It's going in my favorites, because those were the days. Reading it brought me eleven years back in time. My favorite part was this stanza:
"when a kiss could heal a cut
and a hug could heal a bruise
    when being mature was dumb
and immaturity was all we knew"
I loved the last two lines the best. Wonderful poem. 5/5
