What happened?

How many times we stood looking out this window
gazing at the moon and counting the stars
We stood together making our plans
and talking of the future
A future as bright as the moon
and plans as beautiful as those stars
Time has passed and I now stand alone
gazing at those stars like so many broken dreams
I wonder where it all went wrong
why we let go and let it end
In my heart I still hold you
and watch those stars twinkle in your eyes
I remember all the carefree laughter
that once filled the room
Those feelings remain in my heart
where now is left a quiet lonely sound
Wishing on a falling star we could start over
go back and make things right again
But as I think of them I wonder
what ever happened to the promise of forever
