That Summer...

by Polaroid   Jul 7, 2008

Remember all of those songs,
the ones we listened to a million times
over the summer.
Whenever I hear them now
that's what I remember.
And I smell the distinct smell that shrouded your house. A good smell, don't worry.

Do you remember walking
all the way behind E.J Dunn
and then turning around and saying
"Wow how did we get this far?"

I think of that now as two different meanings,
whether you meant them or not.
Of course the obvious one
of having walked so far
in seemingly no time at all.

But I also think of it as a statement of our friendship, and how far it had gotten along
Remember all the things
we talked about along the way.
Boys, School, Far off places.

Remember making all those promises
to each other about book clubs, of course.
Remember sitting in the sun on my porch
and just reading together in silence.

Even though we didn't say a word
I feel as if it were the best conversation
we ever have had.
I remember the books we read too.
Uglies and a great and terrible beauty

Remember creating all those great ideas.
And becoming so very exited
Remember slowly growing closer and closer. Remember coming over to play Mario cart
sitting their at the edge of my bed,
screaming at the screen.

Remember late night American Idol,
wondering who would win.
Do you remember Premonition
and being afraid of walking home in the dark.

Do you remember Sunday night dinners,
wow weren't they great?
And remember spending everyday together;
And still managing to have fun.

Remember the order that broke apart
But remember it being so much fun
It seemed so real to us at the time
And searching for the haven was an adventure

Remember the smell of lemon bunt cake,
and exploring up the creek.
Remember late night sleepovers,
and watching lame Disney movies.
Remember going golfing twice a week
and all the tournaments that we took part in.

Remember block parties, when my dad was drunk.
I remember giving you sideways glances
that said "I think my dads gone loopy."
Remember going shopping for the return of school. Buying all new stuff with our moms,
who were trying to be cool.

Remember when summer was just about done,
and we were the best the world had ever seen.
I remember going back,
and we were still a real great team.

I remember carpooling,
and laughing at your license plate.
I remember Halloween
and although the past lingered we still had a great time. Running down the streets in our costumes
gathering candy that we ended up throwing away.

I remember when Christmas finally rolled around,
and how we were still holding up.
Then I remember how we drifted apart,
and why this sadley occured
I remember crying at night,
thinking about what I could've done.

In tthe end I remember saying to myself
"Me and Her we'll still have fun"
for I knew deep down inside,
that we'd always be great friends.

We never really got around
To being like we were that summer
But I now that I'll always remember
How much fun I had with you

Some things are meant to last forever
But we must've just had bad luck
We'll never be like we were back then
But its not the end quite yet.

Now even if this is the last letter I send,
I'll never forget that summer.
The one that changed my life,
for the worse or for the better.
