As the cruel winter wind blew against the living room windows -
- flakes of snow began hugging them like delicate white fairy wings
Each one looking through the windows with their frozen eyes; seeking a new home -
- before the cruel wind blew again, sending them like prisoners on an unending icy journey.
Outside, once green trees and shrubs began wearing coats of pure white -
- their outstretched branches looking like many drooping arms of mother Nature
The only bird I see is your friend the Robin Redbreast who appears to be enjoying the falling snow
No doubt other birds long decided to depart for warmer climes and fled this winter island.
A smile warms my face as I realise that even through this bleak and freezing winter period -
- there remains life abundant with so many creatures living or sleeping in underground habitats
My thoughts turn to you my lovely Orchid Lady and I peep into our bedroom to see you -
- what a gift meets my eyes as I gaze at you sleeping peacefully among your private dreams.
How I want to gently wake you up to witness this first snowfall and the ballet of dancing snowflakes
But you look so warm; I don't have the heart to tear you away from your sleeping thoughts
Gently I close the bedroom door to hide your ears from the buffeting of this uncaring Antarctic wind
A falling log from the burning fire reminds me to ensure the sitting room will be warm when you arrive.
What tricks nature plays in my mind though the sky is a dark grey, where snow has fallen it remains so bright
Sadly, the distant mountains are hidden by this falling snow which is also swallowing up the pathway
The room is cosy and warm now so quickly I come back to you and gently call out your name -
- please forgive me my orchid, but this is too important a part of our life and I wish you to share it with me.
As you stir I feel guilty at spoiling your nightly journey
