Thirteen

Dedicated to my mother

We take sides when we start to change
We hold on tighter when we start to fade
If I swear to God not to let you go
Will you test my faith just to see where it goes
If it's not my mother stuck between love and control
Then it's your habits that got me sold
I admit I lost it all, left it for everyone to hold
But will you test my strength one last time
It doesn't matter anyway

I took one step at a time every day
I hit the ground, bruise and frayed
I had one hand interlocked with mine
Your fingertips burned my skin out of line
If it's not my life's sudden turnabout
Then it's your mistakes that go me all figured out
I admit I love you all, but where are you now?
Will you test my strength one last time
I know I'll make it this time
