Spare Me My Heart

by MzLonely   Aug 10, 2008

There was a knock on the door,
She went to answer,
And there he stood,
A beautiful tall stranger.

He was looking for shelter
That cold, stormy night.
And she allowed him in.
Had she allowed him only into her house,
Everything would have been fine.
But she also allowed him into her heart,
That cold, stormy night.

Her heart looked beautiful to him.
But as days went by,
The beauty began to fade,
And she interested him no more.
So he left.
Leaving her,
And her shattered heart behind.

Days went by.
Weeks went by.
Months went by.
And she laid sobbing over her shattered heart.

Then one day another knock came at the door.
It was yet another stormy night.
And yet another tall stranger.

He too came looking for shelter,
But she was scared to be broken any further,
So before she let him in,
She pulled all her strength together
And said
"Before you leave, take anything you want
But spare me my heart."

He looked down to see her heart,
Shattered on the floor.
And each broken piece,
Sang out to him.

And so he stayed,
Day by day he put the pieces together.
Being her friend,
Her parent,
Her shoulder,
Anything she needed,
He would turn into.

Slowly the heart began to mend.
There were always holes and gaps,
Signifying the pain that she had felt,
But when she was near him,
She was much too happy to notice the gaps at all.

And so he stayed forever with her.
Sheltering her with all that she needed.
