American Soldier

by Holly Emma   Aug 14, 2008

You know what a soldier said to me,
I will always do my duty, no matter what's the price;
I know the consequences, but I must fight.
I'll protect my brothers and my sisters,
I will always do my best.
When I do, I can sleep at night.
I'll stand ready, I'll be strong and I'll be steady.

He yelled out and cried, I'm an American Soldier.
I watched the soldier walk toward the plane,
He turned around, his family waving goodbye.
He whispered to himself, I'm doing what's right.

I'll sleep tonight and I'll think of my duty.
No matter how hard, I'll do it.
I'm fighting for my country and also for myself.
He stepped on board and sat down next to another.
He met the gaze of the young man, who started praying.

He asked, You're going to be alright, you have your family prayers.
The man smiled and looked up; tears came rolling down his face.
I'm not doing this for the fame, even though I need to pay bills.
For the glory, I'll just do it anyway. I'll proudly stand up tall and say,
I'm an American Soldier. I'll fight for my country,
Even though death is on my doorstep.

Wow, this is a really touching poem, and is beautifully written. There is so much meaning in your words and I enjoyed this a lot. If you really think about it, it is amazing how much soliders do for us. They risk their own life to help our country. Good work. Keep writing, always and forever...
