Closed For The Season

by rob   Aug 18, 2008

As the dust begins to settle what little sanguinity
remained gains flight in one of the last summer winds
From here the promises and memories start to fade
and our vows an ominous and impassive force rescinds

A confusing and murky mass on the horizon the future
now threatens like one of the last squalls of the season
From possibility, to probability, to surety, the questions
are answered but I still can't fully accept the reason

Lonely open roads seem forbidding for the first time
as the thunder beckons in the distant hillside
Unjust rules bind not only my heart, but my soul,
and my physical being, but by these rules I must abide

Precipitous time accelerates the once warmly received
sundown and daybreak that now come to pass too promptly
Sleep that once came effortlessly now requires hours of
wakenings filled with my penitent reflection nightly

The occasional falling leaves and crisp nights convey
a forlorn fall announces it's not far off in the distance
September, October, November, December, months once
exalted I now dread come with a fervid persistence

Summertime, the time of joyous furloughs and adventure,
a time to celebrate with both family and friend
The warm sunshine and children's laughter will forever
be reminiscent of the fences I'll never be able to mend
