Lucky Penny

by Melissa   Aug 23, 2008

Copper and worn against the blackened ground,
It was flattened and lonely, waiting to be found.
Gleaming in the early morning sun,
I saw the penny lying there, anticipating to be won.

Face up; it was, when I put it in the palm of my hand.
To my surprise, it wasn't ordinary but so grand.
My superstition made me laugh as many times before.
But for some reason this little penny, I simply couldn't just ignore.

The day I found that one cent piece was one of the best
Happiness overcame me, and all was at rest.
My heart didn't seem so lonely and the sky was a brighter shade of blue
Life seemed to be going great, despite all I had been through.

When the sky had darkened and the day came to an end.
I took the penny from my pocket, for I knew someone else needed this silent friend.
Placing it on my thumb, flipping it into the air,
I watched it hit the pavement in a satisfied stare.

Face up; it was.
Thank you, penny, for bringing me such luck.
