So I'm sitting here watching the news when a story comes on that absolutely outrages me.
In a nutshell, the LDS church is working fervently to have the California court ruling that approves gay marriage, overturned.
Here's a statement the church released directed at its members:
"We ask that you do all you can to support the proposed constitutional amendment by donating of your means and time to ensure that marriage in California is legally defined as being between a man and a woman.
"
Here's my question to the LDS church: can't your members "means and time" be utilized on a more humanitarian and less discriminatory cause? No one is asking you to let gay marriage take place on your premises or be performed by your church leaders. This is NOT a church issue; it is a civil rights and HUMAN RIGHTS issue.
The state does interfere with your practices, why must you overstep your bounds and interfere with theirs?
Why is it that the LDS church is so perturbed by gay marriage? Are homosexuals standing on their temple stairs holding hands and--heaven forbid--kissing?! No, they are not. They're leaving you alone, so leave them alone.
Why doesn't the church and it's members focus their "means and time" on enriching the lives of their own MEMBERS in whatever ways their belief system instructs them to do, rather than trying to impede on the lives of NONMEMBERS by imposing their old-fashioned, narrow minded, discriminatory, condemnatory, separatist beliefs on them?
Forgive me if I'm being unfairly harsh on the LDS church. The vast majority of organized religions are opposed to homosexuality, in turn, are opposed to gay marriage. But, in my estimation, the LDS church is one institution that does a very good job at making homosexuals feel like sinners of the worste variety. Way to keep all your members struggling with their homosexuality buried deep in the closet.
