The Cycle

by Gentle Storm   Sep 2, 2008

Nine in the dark, hundreds in the light,
Why, I ask, do we cry at the first sight?
Is it that we already know, of what is to unfold,
That smites us in the face, like lightning tenfold?

A genesis so simple, as the white in which we delight,
In oblivion of the end, will it be as bright?
Everything is a first, from the word to the step,
And all around you is glee, from those past the first step.

All your actions thereafter, attract no jot of glee,
Mistake upon mistake, from the cane you have to flee.
This sudden change of heart, you surely did not foresee,
It is a vicious cycle, to that we all agree.

To you and for you, things are done with no assent,
Barely settled in, already away you're sent,
To experience and to enjoy, and for yourself to learn to fend.
You turn to air complaint, the door's shut from the other end.

Like volcanic lava, ideas and emotions flow,
Of necessity not choice, it's time to learn and grow.
You meet new kinds of people, friends and foes alike,
To you unknown new feelings, "Jane and Rose I like."
Your eyes begin to open, the sight just leaves you stiff,
More things to learn and do? They sip and smoke and sniff.

Learn more lest you be late,
They kill and lust and hate!
Nobody left to turn to, brought and left out here,
In this jungle full of beasts, what you've learned is very dear.

What more? You dare to ask,
Well, progeny's your final task.
You think it can't be true for sure,
That the cycle, another has to endure.
