Bens Puppy

by Rodney Kirby   Sep 19, 2008

Little Ben's gift was a puppy, that filled him with joy,
Now the wet kisses were real and not from a toy,

Ben loved his puppy, and everywhere they went,
Up and down the meadows, it was time well spent,

Ben named him Drake, and took him to school
Drake was fed by the kids, he was nobody's fool,

He patiently waited for Ben to get done,
Then down through fields, the two friends would run,

They were an inseparable pare, and a and pure love grew,
They loved each other unconditionally and this got them through,

One day Ben walked home, and drake was far back
Drake could not get there in time to stop the attack,

The mountain lion was fast and tore Ben to ground,
Drake rushed to little Ben who didn't make a sound,

Drake was a small dog and hit the lion fast,
He took the life from the lion but also whimpered his last,

Ben ran home crying and told they story to his dad,
His father could not replace the love of his dog and this made him sad,

As Christmas time came his father knew what it would take,
A whimper came from a box, and on the side it said drake

    Oh my gosh
You are fantastic. I could see the images of boy and dog in the fields. You penned this so well. It completely choked me up.
I lost my dog to coyotes when we lived in Az for a while. Never forget the sound.
    take care, awesome write.
