All Of A Sudden

by Ignoris   Sep 27, 2008

Used to play with the boy just down the street
We'd play all day long, on the concrete
Used to take out the hose on a boiling hot day
My sister and I, each other we'd spray
Used to ask my dad, 'make things disappear'
Across the room, we'd find it and cheer
Used to hear that one bird, its sweet little song
Constantly there, I never did sing along

But then that boy's family fell apart
Fighting, divorce, my parents knew from the start
Now he's in college but sometimes still waves
As if it's memories he's trying to save

And then all a sudden it just wasn't cool
To play with little sisters, you'd look like a fool
So then when I asked her, gleaming, excited
She said 'no way', no hose, it's decided

And then with my dad, the magic was gone
All his magic tricks would crack a yawn
I guess then he just didn't bother again
I was probably eight, my sister ten

But then, above all, the bird was back
Back from the memories that my memories lack
I heard its song, wait for past and present to meet
But I guess now its song just isn't so sweet
