Ascension (Villanelle)

by Beautiful Chaos   Oct 25, 2008

When my soul is freed, I'll spark the fire,
Coming alive, shaking off the lies,
Drifting in heaven's pristine ocean, far from the mire.

Bloodied head to toe, climbing the spire,
My heart pounding, as it cries,
When my soul is freed, I'll spark the fire.

Rain falling, to cleanse my desire,
Soon, whole, I'll arise,
Drifting in heaven's pristine ocean, far from the mire.

Destruction forgotten, I'll live to inspire,
Truth living in my spirit, my eyes,
When my soul is freed, I'll spark the fire.

From fallen angel, full of ire,
To swimming peacefully, from demise,
Drifting in heaven's pristine ocean, far from the mire.

Bloodied head to toe, climbing the spire,
Coming alive, shaking off the lies,
Drifting in heaven's pristine ocean, far from the mire,
When my soul is free, I'll spark the fire.

(A Villanelle is a nineteen-line poem consisting of a very specific rhyming scheme: aba aba aba aba aba abaa. The first and the third lines in the first stanza are repeated in alternating order throughout the poem, and appear together in the last couplet (last two lines).
