Guilty

Running
yelling
screaming
crying
dying

he could hear them
from a mile away
and knew
he couldn't stay
he grabbed his bag
and started to run
couldn't stop
to face what he'd done.

he had to keep running
didn't look back
tried to think like
it was another day on the track.
you shut yourself off
and focus on the ground
keep breathing
and don't make a sound
but his voice caught
and he let out a bellow
like a raging beast
that couldn't be mellowed.

his body shook
wishing her back
his bellows quieted
and wouldn't come back
he screamed her name
to the heavens
and watched as they broke.

cold to the bone
he kept his stride
feeling salt pepper his lips
as he cried
but he pushed on
with red eyes
trying to apologize.

days passed
and finally he stopped
to face his jury
and accept his deed
he knew what would happen
because he was guilty
of letting her get too close
and find out the person
he truly was.
