Interstate Highway

by reJoyce   Oct 27, 2008

Why do I keep looking in the rear view mirror
Playing lyrics back in my head,
"Don't drive away, don't leave her lying hurt"
But accompanied by,
"Give me liberty or give me death"?

We're on an interstate highway
Whose origin and destination reside in the same state
But pass through another on the way

We've become residents of an oxymoron
Permanent Immigrants
So desperate for a new path
That we've lost our own way

Let's take the alternate ending
And replace this tragedy with our dream
We're on the route to nowhere
And the highway patrol aren't slowing us down
Let's take the central exit and turn this fate around.

The east is where we should be
But the west is where our hearts lead
The south is where we're heading
And the north is home and family

The construction signs are out
But where are all the workers?
The road needs fixed
And leaving doesn't get it done

I said, "She's too dangerous
And I can't hurt myself anymore"
So I headed down the abandoned path
But I need to get back the gratitude
And realize that we've got 4 wheels
And safer still than those exposed to the air

The new pavement on the roads ahead
Has a deceiving lack of traction
That'll send us spinning out of control
Sometimes the broken road
Doesn't need replaced

Like corresponding angles
We'll work together to make
A 90 degree escape
From this south bound disaster

With resilience I'll recover from adversity
And with compassion I'll exchange your pain
For my liberty.

Because you're not an over-anticipated letdown
You're an under-anticipated phenomenon
