The Developing Story Of a Melancholy Clown

by Soulful Ensemble   Nov 7, 2008

She wakes up late,
Doesn't sleep enough.
Everyday the same thing is gone,
The feeling inside him
What a bum.
She wakes up dry and asks for more.

I don't think hes used to it,
He doesn't like it anyway.
He needs a little more time
To blow the misery away.
Shes not around early in the morning,
And hes all by himself in a way.

He reads the labels of the bottles,
And knows when the sky is up.
She looks at him and laughs,
And asks if he has a cup.
She needs to drink a little more,
In the morning he'll come knocking at the door.

He never looks the same and his mask is falling off,
I guess he'll have to learn just what is going on.
The war is coming and she doesn't know,
How many times she'll have to put it off.

He likes to read the labels because he doesn't feel safe,
He eyes them over and over, and needs to take a break.
Its not safe how he walks out the door,
Looking for another way to get bored.

Amy does Chinatown, she takes it by the sea,
The ships come into harbor, and she doesn't see.
She's blinded by her hatred for the little things
That come in little boxes and open with a key.

He comes inside and says "I implore you to consider,
The little things you say.
They hurt me in a level,
That takes my heart away."

And she says " oh no I'm sorry,
I like to sit here with a mask
And give you a different story
Every time you ask."

Now shes gone and he asks himself,
" Why am I so numb?
She doesn't like me, I'm a bum.
But it takes one to know one, I should know."

Sometimes his stomach feels the pain of jealousy,
When he sees her talking, oh so happy, with Mr. Spellacy.
He sees her laughter at his jokes, and sees her listening to his songs.
To himself he says, "Mine are better, but they're old, and she needs a new instrument to conform,
Nobody remembers the classics anymore."

Stabs meet him every morning when he wakes, as bad images shoot into his mind,
Shes at the other end, laughing so hard.
With Mr. Spellacy in the yard, wearing a suit and yelling about some Bernard.
He tells himself its nothing, and leaves the Boulevard.

Telling the truth is never good,
She never likes what he has to say.
She's always hurt and runs away,
And forgets everything on the way.

He said he knew a girl who was ran over in a hit and run,
For saying Oswald knew Jack Ruby for years.
They used to sit in his nightclub and drink rum,
And talk of the death of JFK and his peers.

She never liked the facts, and always bought the lies,
But didn't have the money to get an alibi.
He caught her with a man looking at the skies,
And reaching high to take all his old belongings inside.

She takes the art and takes an hour,
Putting it all up on her tower.
"I have too much", she says with power,
"But I wont reimburse you for your time
And talking to me will cost you just a dime."

Shes only around physically, her mind is another thing,
Its stranded miles away and he can't feel it pace.
How fast is it all going when she's into this new fling?
He'll never know and she doesn't leave a trace.

The cat lays down and hes a little sick,
His nose is spraying water and little things.
He cares for him alone, shes busy with a tooth pick,
Scratching off the filth that follows her and impersonates a king.

He reads in the bathroom and sits on the rug,
He crosses his legs and writes her a song.
She's always happy when they are alone,
And when he goes to school her feelings are gone.

He already knows what's coming, so he doesn't close his eyes,
Tomorrow he will see her taking all his things inside.
They're carried in boxes, she labeled with lullabies,
To impress the movers and raise her pride.

Suddenly he's not so sad-- he's engulfed in passion,
As he kisses her and she embraces him.
They're lovers again and the fight is not in fashion
Their love is the new thing and nobody wants to hear anything grim ever again.

"Lets never fight again" he says to her,
" If its not too late to celebrate".
She looks at him and says "I concur",
Now they hold hands and go for a date.
