Clouds in Your Coffee Cup

by ari   Nov 11, 2008

You've got clouds in your coffee cup again,
because cream just isn't good enough.
They're steaming up the air--inhale
and keep your dreams close to you.
Pigments of imagination hibernate in your lungs,
hallucinations a puff and huff away.

Dancing behind your irises, it becomes hard to focus as
whirlwinds of color and wings ooze across
the whites of your eyes.
The world is blocked out and you are slowly blacking out,
and caffeine with a side of cumulus won't do anything
to stave this off.

Raindrops peck your face, too shy
to kiss you the way you deserve.
The mist hugs you while you slowly venture
toward a place beneath your level of consciousness,
moisture clinging to your clammy skin.
Droplets run a course down your neck,
pooling in the crevice of your collarbone,
your tongue jealous and dry.

Seconds of euphoria drain the resistance of your blood,
overcoming your cells and a massacre ensues.
Frenzied love and declarations hastily jumbled in your throat,
racing to fit it all in the time you have until you disappear.
Fragility and frailty take over,
your fingers becoming feather bones wrapped in silk.
Grasp my wrist and plead not to let them take you,
don't ever let anyone take you away.

My dear, winds could spirit you off with ease and deceit,
you're just another shattered soul.
Your powder won't fill the emptiness it created,
you could never resist a challenge.
Does it fix you, make you, love you?
Could you make it? Could you blame it?
All it is is clouds in your coffee cup, around your mouth and nose,
Nestling in the cavity behind your cartilage.

Blow it, snort it, huff it,
keep your dreams close to you.
Don't let them slip away.
