Blessed seed ( Villanelle)

by Ingrid   Nov 12, 2008

In all of us was once put a blessed seed
By our Holy Father from heaven above
Our guider in our every hour of need

Follow his voice wherever it may lead
And reach every goal you ever dreamed of
In all of us was once put a blessed seed

Never let yourself be guided by greed
But by the one force that binds us all: love
Our guider in our every hour of need

Let this one message show in every deed
Words brought to you on the wings of a dove
In all of us was once put a blessed seed

For our prosperity his son did bleed
Suffered and gave his life out of pure love
Our guider in our every hour of need

Remember our Lord in your every deed
Long ago He sent us here to share love
In all of us was once put a blessed seed
Our guider in our every hour of need

This poem was written together with my dear friend LJ Roodt.
Thank you so much for wanting to collaborate with me, LJ. It was an honor and a privilege to work with a man as talented and as kind as you:)

****A big thank you to my friend Alfred, who pointed out to me I made a misstake in the repetition of the lines!

Villanelle:

The villanelle has no established meter, although most nineteenth-century villanelles have used trimeter or tetrameter and most twentieth-century villanelles have used pentameter. The essence of the fixed modern form is its distinctive pattern of rhyme and repetition. The rhyme-and-refrain pattern of the villanelle can be schematized as A1bA2 abA1 abA2 abA1 abA2 abA1A2 where letters ("a" and "b") indicate the two rhyme sounds, upper case indicates a refrain ("A"), and superscript numerals (1 and 2) indicate Refrain 1 and Refrain 2.

Refrain 1 (A1)
Line 2 (b)
Refrain 2 (A2)
Line 4 (a)
Line 5 (b)
Refrain 1 (A1)
Line 7 (a)
Line 8 (b)
Refrain 2 (A2)
Line 10 (a)
Line 11 (b)
Refrain 1 (A1)
Line 13 (a)
Line 14 (b)
Refrain 2 (A2)
Line 16 (a)
Line 17 (b)
Refrain 1 (A1)
Refrain 2 (A2)

A lovely, clever write, Ingrid, full of wisdom, as is so much of what you have to say, it seems.
Aside from that, lovely to read a little about the Villanelle - I admit to having no knowledge at all of it which you have rectified!
All the very best Ingrid and do take care,
    Ben
