Lovers Can't Be Friends

by Jenna   Nov 18, 2008

Once love is gone
When there is no more us,
In trying to remain connected
In friendship we will trust

Now presently a whisper
Of a friendly hello and goodbye
Others come to replace what used to be
Only making it harder to say we are friends, and building a bigger lie

Either one will let it go
Watch the other leave for good
And if I could will myself to leave your memory behind
I would.

Part of you lingers on
But I know all of you is gone and why
There was no friendship to begin with
So after it is over, why should we even try?

No point in staying
And turning away I wish I could go
Tell you your friendship is a lie
Do not deny to what I already know

If I knew now I never would have been there before
I know the truth and I wish we could just pretend
That we were never lovers
So we could be friends.

A truth that is sad to realize because sometimes a friendship is more important than being lovers. Once that line is crossed, it is difficult or next to impossible to return to the friendship. How sad that is. You have expressed the feelings that go with this situation very well.
