From behind the hills

by Ares   Dec 7, 2008

I drift asleep in to the vast circles of space,
alone and loathing the purpose of my existence.
and all these universal images crowd my vision.

I should have kept you hanging around.

I stare in to my empty cup,
not enough to go around.
how could I have let you go?

Needless shall I wander,
the empty fields of the earth,
losing my faith in everything good,
culminating in the absolute loss of faith,
that one day a woman will come from behind the hills,
and with her white dress barely clinging to her body,
she'll motion for me to come to her,
and stay with her for ever.

You do such a good job setting a stage-one of the most important things in reading a poem is the ability to tell who the speaker is- you just lay it right out there, it makes sense, and at least in this case, you have no choice but to sympathize with him.
It is interesting how he is loathing the 'purpose' of his existence, it's a nice variation- most people want it to be a meaningless existence. Great difference.
The use of faith in two consecutive sentences kind of bothers me a little, but I can't think of much else I'd change about the poem.
    Great write :D
