So Close

by ShyandHurt   Dec 17, 2008

My heart bounces and thumps, catching in my throat.

I don't know why I'm surprised, she always shows her face at the most horrible moment.

Racing, I start to walk away, my foot steps so sure and silent, my breath still managing to be even.

A hushed tone whispers to my ear, "Stay...come back...stay..." I shudder and pick up my pace to a jog, I need to get away.

My stomach is in my feet as I start to run, I can feel her coming nearer, her intense presence too strong to resist.

"Stay...you don't need anyone else...stay...I'm what you really want." The voice becomes more insistent, pulling me back.

"No!" I scream to her, I won't go back!

Forward I plunge, my feet seem to get heavier as I try desperately to flee this horrid woman.

This has happened to many times before, I always lose.

I shut my eyes for a mere moment, brushing away my tears of frustration, I'm trying to hard, I can't lose again!

Once my lids open again I scream with pain, for there she stands, so tall and intimidating.

Her black eyes glared with sparks of fire in them, they stare at me like large pieces of coal, I am transfixed.

Pointing behind me, back into darkness she commands. "Back, now. You can't escape me. Why try?"

I nearly collapse with defeat as I unwillingly turned on my heel, shaking from head to toe.

Why does she catch me every time, I get so close to the light just to be dragged back into the darkness.

Who is this woman that keeps me hostage in my own mind?

Depression.

Depression is her name.
