Days Pass Me By

by Meiko   Dec 20, 2008

One after another,
All of them,
A succession,
Same old
Same old.
Ladies in their rocking chairs
Gossip and giggle.
Heat lightning
Gathers in the clouds,
Raspberry iced tea
Can't cool them.
Dogs slurp water,
Drops fall back to parched earth.
White shoes are acceptable now.
I watch and listen,
Feel the thunderstorm heat,
Midday muggy,
Hear the cicadas
Play their staccato chorus.
White lazily drags along
The bright blue sky.
I watch and wait.
Night falls,
Sunset stain,
Blood and oranges
Spattered
Across the ocean's horizon.
Fireworks sound,
Bright explosions
Hanging like stars in our black canopy.
Night sounds:
Secret stolen moments,
Where insects cry for their lovers, and
Men and women toss and turn in sleep.
Houses settle,
Breezes blow,
Upsetting playground equipment.
Swings twitch
And the merry-go-round turns a little.
Island of water,
Oasis,
Perhaps one day.
But for now, it is summer,
And the thunderstorm is started.
